Zen at the Desk

Tibetan monks who are seeking enlightenment, sometimes will meditate five or six hours a day. But today what I want to do is show you is how you can do a five or six minute meditation right at your .

Some people find it useful to have a little clock that they can put in front of them where they can glance at it so they know that five minutes has .

In terms of the mediation itself, you want to sit up straight. You want to get your back straight, but not uncomfortably straight. You want to put your tongue right at the top of your .

And, as you start to meditate, you either want to close your eyes, or cast your eyes down, so you are not looking .

So, start observing your breath. I find it easier, actually, to try to feel the breath right at your nose. And count. As it goes in, count one, as you let it out, count two. And see how far you can go with the counting before you notice that your mind has wandered. And when your mind has wandered, just bring your mind back to the breath and start over .

A lot of times, people will say to me, “Well, I don’t have a quiet place to meditate.” And, you know, this is actually is a real problem and there is no single answer to .

There are teachers who will actually teach people to meditate on the sounds around them. As long as you’ve got a place where people are not going to bother you while you are meditating, I don’t think it has to be perfectly .

One of the nice things about meditation, is that how often you meditate is, sort of, up to you. Studies suggest that, actually, the more you meditate, the more benefit you get. Probably, trying to do it once a day for five or ten minutes, is an ideal strategy for people that are very .

The more you do, the better you get at it, the bigger effect you are going to see. But what you should begin to notice, if you are doing it correctly, and getting benefit, is that I think you’ll find that things are a little bit more slowed down, you’ll feel a little bit less stressed out. You’ll have a larger perspective on things. So, rather than getting, sort of, stuck on little irritating details, you’ll find it easier to take a look at the whole picture and stay calmer in dealing with all the things you have to deal with every day.
